The idea for this came to me randomly today and I wanted to share with you guys how such a simple business idea like selling firewood online can actually make you money.
Is There Opportunity?
I had a look at Google Trends and it seems this is actually quite a popular thing people are searching for:
Primarily the interest seems to be coming from NZ and Ireland along with the US, Canada, Australia and UK. I also did some local research and there’s plenty of people looking to buy firewood from all over with very little competition taking advantage of it.
So far so good, here’s my top 3 ideas as promised to dig into this as a potential busienss idea…
Idea #1- List It On Local Classified Websites
I’m guessing the majority of people reading this have their own wood and want to learn how to offload this in the easiest and most profitable way possible using the Internet. Awesome!
One of the best ways to get rolling is to list your product on websites like these:
It’s free and you should get a good amount of exposure this way. It does come with some drawbacks though, a major one being the direct competition you will likely come up against since this is the free and easy method.
Idea #2- Promote FireWood With Your Own Website
There’s a couple of different ways this method can work for you:
Your Own Supply
First off… don’t be worried about the thought of building a website! It’s ridiculously easy if you go about it the right way and it’s a very low cost option.
This idea is about listing your firewood on your own website and selling it directly to the public. The advantage to this is you are positioning yourself way ahead of the competition and you’re likely to get a lot more customers than you would with option 1 alone.
The disadvantage is you’ll need plenty of stock depending on how much you want to sell.
Someone Else’s Stash
If you don’t have your own stockpile of lumber then fear not! It’s actually very possible to sell other people’s wood through your own website.
There’s bound to be people nearby selling this stuff that don’t know much about the Internet or how to effectively leverage it to sell product. All you need to do is be the person that does know to leverage the web to your advantage. By following some basic training you can launch a fully functional website to present your offerings to a steady stream of targeted buyers.
Here’s how the process might look:
- Build a website and get regular visitors (I’ll show you how)
- Get prices from local suppliers
- Customer calls YOU to place an order
- Meet supplier on location 5 minutes early and pay for the order- say $50
- When customer arrives collect their money ($85) and help them load up their order if you feel up to it
- You just made $35 easy money (if you did this just 20 times per month you’d make a cool $700)
Here’s where this gets a lot more appealing…
Once you get into the swing of things you could easily automate the entire buying and delivery process. You could set up a secure payment facility on your site (free and easy) and have people pay you online and then just collect their order from the supplier by themselves.
As far as paying the supplier is concerned you could simply purchase a set amount of stock in advance. You’ve already made some money at this point and know the supplier so purchasing $200 in advance is no big deal.
As soon as a customer orders from you and you’re paid, all you need to do is negotiate an approximate pickup time with the customer and supplier. In other words, be the middle man for 10 minutes! Once everything is set up and your website is getting visitors there’s very little you need to do in order to maintain it. By thinking outside the box and taking some initiative you are now making some decent extra cash for very minimal time and effort!
There’s a real lack of competition locally for a lot of places I researched which makes this a very achievable concept.
For example: I decided to scope out Melbourne (Australia) and randomly chose the ‘Mornington Peninsula’ area. In this one region alone there’s nearly 50 people searching for firewood every month and the competition is so low I could have my website up and ranking in the next few days- worst case!
This is a screenshot I took from a research program I currently use called Jaaxy but you don’t need to use this to get started, I’m just showing you the realtime stats for this example:
Personally, what I would do is buy “firewoodmorningtonpeninsula.com” and put up a website with some relevant content including a page outlining what I am offering. Throw your contact info on there and that’s it, it’s really not complicated when you know how I can assure you.
The advantage to this option is you can get rolling quite quickly given how specialised your campaign will be.
The disadvantage is you are kind of limited to earning an ‘extra’ income given the local nature of this business model. You’d also want to watch out that the supplier didn’t try and harvest your buyers so some initial groundwork and relationship building may be required. Once the supplier (most likely a regular home owner with some property) sees you are bringing them extra business though, the last thing they are going to want to do is compromise that.
To get rolling with this you’ll need the right training and tools to build your website.
Idea #3- Become a Fully Fledged FireWood Affiliate!
This is where the real money is made and in my opinion what trumps the last 2 options I’ve presented you with by a country mile. Your success with this will depend on how committed you are to learning though and this will take the most time and effort.
Affiliate marketing is where you create a website, fill it with relevant content, get people visiting it and make commissions promoting relevant products and services online.
For example: You do some research and discover there’s a lot of opportunity in the ‘wood fired pizza oven’ niche. There’s plenty of people searching for this and the competition is relatively low. Since you’re personally already interested in this niche you have plenty or related stuff you can write about on your new website like:
- Types of pizza ovens
- Wood fired vs conventional
- review different models
- Compare prices
- Give tips on cooking the best wood fired pizzas
- How to set our new oven up
- On and on and on….
There are boatloads of things you could talk about in this one niche alone and since you are genuinely helping people (and you followed some basic training) you are being ranked in Google which is resulting in a steady stream of targeted buyers to your website.
You’ll then learn how to set up your own unique ‘affiliate links’ within your website to promote relevant products and services. When your visitors click on these links and make a purchase, you get paid a commission!
Companies like eBay and Amazon among many others pay you a commission to send them new business, it’s really that simple.
Here’s an eBay video I found to illustrate this further:
The fact is there are millions of products you can promote online and tons of affiliate programs you can join for free to facilitate this.
The list of possible niche ideas surrounding this one concept of ‘wood’ alone is nuts, here’s a few I came up with in about 2 minutes:
- Specialty timber products
- Hand crafted timber furniture
- Wood blinds
- Wood carving tools
- Timber picture frames
- Timber flooring
- Wood carving knives
- Wood chippers
- Wooden toys
- Power tools for timber
- Wood heaters
Each one of the ideas I’ve listed above could be turned into a full time income, in fact any niche at all has this potential!
We are living in a time where one of the most valuable assets you can posses is ‘eyeballs’. If you can learn how to get people in front of what you have to say then you can definitely make money online with this. You MUST get the right training, tools and support to make this work. Without these vital ingredients coming to you from a trusted source you’ll likely end up lost in the online world, being scammed by the so called ‘gurus’ who are in the business of selling people false hope.
I know this because I’ve been there, it sucks! Let me be clear here though…
This is NOT going to make you rich quickly and it WILL take time and effort but the rewards are great for those that understand this opportunity and take hold of it with both hands.
