Product: $5000 From Scratch
Owner: Ewen Chia
I have come across some of Ewen Chia's products before and they were extremely average so I was surprised to see this did have some value. For the price, you get some worthwhile insights and some interesting ideas to build an online business, but there are drawbacks to consider.
What Is The $5000 From Scratch System?
This is the latest product from a well known Internet marketer named Ewen Chia and supposedly teaches complete newbies how to make 5k per month for 15 minutes work per day. I can safely say that part is a crock, no newbie is going to make that kind of cash from scratch in only 15 minutes per day! Come on.
According to the sales page the idea came about after receiving the 'million dollar question from a guy named Jim:
Ewen, I really want to make internet marketing work for me. I have a full time job, two children and just don't have 5 hours a day to spare. I am a complete newbie and I don't have the reputation and credibility like you do. How can I make money online starting from scratch?
I have to admit I was pretty skeptical at first since I've already purchased one of Ewen's programs before and it wasn't very good to say the least. But I decided to give this one a try in the hopes he had come up with something better this time around.
Inside The Members Area
Before getting into the members area you will endure 2 upsells amounting to $104 which is annoying but it's also pretty standard stuff in this space. I couldn't believe what I saw after getting into the members area though, a video that overlaid the entire screen promoting yet another product.
That's not the worst part though. This is the exact same video he used to promote AutoPilot Profits which is one of the lowest quality products I have ever purchased or reviewed to date. The only difference is that this video leads people to buy some kind of 'Inner Circle Membership'.
This was a terrible way to introduce his new product in my opinion but it only got worse with 7 addittional upsells disguised as the part of the product!
Addittional Products You Are Encouraged To Buy
- First 2 Upsells= $104
- Inner Circle Membership= $27 p/m + $217 one time
- Money On Demand= $37
- AutoPilot Profits= $37
- Done For Your Internet Business= $97
- Complete Business Set-Up= $297
- Million Dollar Alliance= $49 -$10,000's (high ticket mlm program called MTTB/MOBE)
- Special Cash Software= $197
- Total upsells= $1,062
Ewen gets people in the door to one of his programs and then cross sells his other products. This is just how he operates and probably one of the reasons he has made good money. I love seeing people achieve success but it's the way he promotes things and the quality of the products I don't like personally. I'd have WAY more respect for the guy if he didn't spam the crap out of me with addittional (and in some cases useless) products.
The Core Product Explained
Once you get past the annoying promos you are hit with left right and centre... you finally get what you freaking paid for! The product consists of 6 main videos. These are hosted on YouTube so realistically you could just access this for free. Since there is some value in this training I don't feel right about sharing the links though, I would only do this for an outright scam. The good news is I explain what each video consists of below so you can decide if this is worth your time and money!
Video #1 -Finding A Niche
This is all about finding a desperate group of people with a high disposable income and your mission is to learn about and build a relationship with these people. He provides a few examples of different niches that fit into this category and encourages you to go after a niche you are passionate about which is solid advice. You are shown some methods to find your niche such as forums and other sites like Magazine.com and Amazon.com.
As far as marketing and online business goes, he definitely does know what he is talking about and he is actually giving you some worthwhile insights overall. I have to admit I was surprised by this given my last experience with his product.
Video #2 - Finding A High Ticket Product
The concept of this system is all about promoting high ticket products as an affiliate instead of slaving away promoting $5 ebooks. Makes sense. An affiliate is someone that makes money promoting other people's stuff and this IS a legitimate business model in itself.
In order to find these products to promote you are directed to perform a simple Google search which is easy enough to do. To promote whatever product you choose you will need to sign up for the affiliate program the company is running which in most cases is totally free and easy to do.
There is no doubt that promoting high ticket affiliate products can be VERY lucrative and he is presenting this opportunity in an honest and straightforward manner. But choosing a niche and a product to promote is the easy part, it's getting traffic and the actual promotion element that requires the most effort and skill.
Video #3 - Creating Your Facebook Group
This is the 'meatiest' video of the bunch at just under 45 minutes long and shows you how to create your own Facebook Group that relates to your chosen niche. Ewen uses the free Google Keyword Planner to come up with several broad and 'buyer' related keywords to name his example group with. The rest of the video explains how to set up your group, post content in it and answer questions from members etc.
I'm not an expert when it comes to Facebook Groups but this does seem like an interesting approach to affiliate marketing in itself. One thing I will say is you need to know what you are talking about in whatever niche you choose and be able to add value to people who join your group, which means this takes work and effort. Much more than just 15 minutes per day!
You are essentially becoming the 'leader' of a group of people who will ask questions and judge whether or not the information you are giving them is credible. It is important to choose something you know or want to know something about and genuinely help people, otherwise you probably won't see much success with this.
Video #4 - Promoting Your Group
In the world of Internet marketing, the single most important element to actually making any money at all is getting traffic (people) to your offers. You can have the greatest FB group, squeeze pages and websites in the world but if no one visits them, you won't make a dime! So what do you get shown?
The first way you are shown to get traffic is by offering insightful comments on similar and relevant FB groups and pages. The goal is that these folks will click through to your group and want to join. This can work but it's nothing new and borderlines on spam if done incorrectly. Other methods include forum posting and warm market techniques. Cool...
The video then briefly touches on other strategies like posting on Instagram, blogs and Twitter but doesn't give much actionable insight. Unfortunately, this is where the training really comes unstuck and where most products in this space fall down. When it comes to the fundamental element of getting traffic, it really comes down to buying addittional products like the "Traffic From Scratch" upsell for $67 (not sure how good this is) or paying for traffic.
I'm not sure how well this is working out for Ewen either. I did some digging and it turns out that on one hand he is ranked within FB for his keyword but no one has joined! It is only early days though to be fair.
The remaining video provides some insights into creating FB ads which is an awesome traffic strategy in itself. The main reason for this is the high level of audience targeting available and the tracking and tweaking you can do. The training here isn't too bad but it's really just an overview at around 20 minutes long. If you want to go this route I recommend reading some free blog posts and maybe buying a reliable training course for this. If you start paying for any kind of traffic without knowing what you are doing it can end up costing you big time.
Important Note: FB ads for promoting FB groups is not an option that is given by FB as default, which means you need to promote your group as if it's a real website. Ewen advises you to shorten the URL of your group page so FB won't recognise it which is going back to his usual black hat methods. I did some digging and found that while it is acceptable to do this, you must only promote an 'open' group. Ewen recommends creating a 'closed group' in previous lessons which in itself does seem like the better approach. The trouble is that if FB doesn't like using ads for closed groups so you could end up in deep water doing this. Proceed with caution here.
Video #5 - Adding Value To Your Group
This video outlines how to go about engaging with your group by adding different kinds of content. It also explains different ways you can inject your promos throughout your group. This is useful in understanding how to become an authority which is key to making this work.
Video #6 - Advanced Monetization Methods
This is a very short video that essentially gives you some addittional ideas to monetise your group including selling advertising space, building your email list and creating your own product.
This is a series of videos that was created primarily by one of Ewens people named 'Kevin' back in 2011. There is some value in this but there are two major issues- it is very outdated and gives some very bad advice.
For example, Kevin suggests that building a website and leveraging free search engine traffic is a bad idea because Google will stomp out your website with it's newest algorithm update which is what happened to many black hat marketers like Ewen and crew several years ago. Here's the thing... you are unlikely to be effected by such an algorithm update unless you are doing the wrong thing! Like buying backlinks or publishing duplicate content for example.
What would I know? I know how to rank websites and I personally show people how to make money with a website and effectively leverage search engine traffic without worrying about algorithm updates.
This section at the very bottom serves as nothing more than more upselling. To disguise this the programs are mostly free to join or try but they inevitably lead to a sale. Hey, maybe the products are worthwhile. I haven't reviewed the programs so I can't speculate on how good they are. The bottom line is that they are not resources, they are promotions.
What I Liked
- Some decent information into using a FB group to promote high ticket affiliate products
- The core product is low cost and can be purchased for $7 by clicking away a few times
- Ewen does share some worthwhile marketing insights all things considered
- Solid refund policy through ClickBank
What I Didn't Like
- Ridiculous number of upsells before during and after the core content
- The way Ewen promotes his products is mislaeading and spammy in my opinion
- The true cost to actually make this work is much higher than $17, especially if you are a newbie
- Doesn't expalin that by promoting a closed FB group using FB ads could land you in deep water
- The traffic training is very limited
- Some of Ewens other products are complete garbage yet he still promotes them
It's not a scam and there is some worthwhile training being offered.
I have to admit I was genuinely surprised to find that this was half decent. Especially considering the promo methods he uses and some of the other crap he's put out over the years. Ewen definitely understands how to make money online and provides some useful insights into the concept of high ticket niche marketing. If you're keen to try affiliate marketing with a FB group then this might be worth checking out.
That said, there are some very real drawbacks as I have explained in this review and I don't recommend this as the best approach to building an online business. With this approach you could easily end up spending $1000's in addittional products and be stuck paying for traffic without making a dime. It's not a scam, but it's not somehting I actively recommend either. There are better ways to promote high ticket products online in my opinion.
