Lesson #1 | Understanding The Concept
There are many ways to make money from a website, many of which you may never have know existed.
You are going to be developing a free resource for people looking for solutions to their problems online. In doing so, you are attracting a steady stream of targeted visitors to your site that are willing to pay 'someone' to solve that problem.
How You're Going To Make Money
To make money with your website you do not need to sell anything yourself. Not at all.
All you need to do is create an audience online and provide that audience with valuable content that helps them in some way.
There are millions of websites online (both big and small) that provide something of value to people and 'monetise' their website in one way or another. I explain the different monetisation strategies later in the course. For now just understand that by giving people value and getting them to visit your site, you can and will make money! I promise you this.
For this course I am going to focus on just ONE simple and effective method to make money with your website, affiliate marketing.
Important Terms You Need To Understand
Affiliate marketing: Promoting other people's stuff
Affiliate link: This is a text or image that 'links' a website visitor to another webpage just like any other standard link. The only difference is this link is coded to you personally and is how vendors know how much to pay you. Keep reading, I explain more about this below.
Niche: In this context, it's just a group of people looking for something online, or a target audience.
Traffic: People who visit your website. For example you are 'traffic' on my website now!
Affiliate Marketing With a Website Explained
In this training I'm going to focus on the method I use to make money from my websites and what I believe is one of the most profitable ways to build your online business. The method I am talking about is called affiliate marketing and it pays out affiliates over $4 billion every year and rising.
Companies like Amazon, Dell and Reebok are just a few companies that pay affiliates (you) a commission for sending them new customers. There are thousands of these companies worldwide in just about any niche you could think of. If there's a product, there's an affiliate program for it somewhere online.
Simple Affiliate Model
Customer ==> Affiliate ==> Vendor
You are essentially the person in between the online store and the customer.
Your job isn't to sell people anything, it's to help them and give them valuable and unbiased information about the products the vendor is offering. This can be done via publishing relevant info about those kinds of products in general and specific product reviews and information. This helps consumers make a more informed decision.
More Detailed Affiliate Model
Customer ==> Affiliate ==> Affiliate Program ==> Vendor
Quite often the retailers themselves don't want to deal with all of the technical stuff so they sign up with an affiliate network that facilitates the whole process and tracks everything. The customer never sees this part but it works in the background to make everything work as it should.
For example: You sign up to the ZERC affiliate network to promote Snowboard Haven's products. ZERC tracks, facilitates everything (and pay you) so you never even need to deal with Snowboard Haven directly.
Amazon is so big it has it's own affiliate program but companies like CJ Affiliate and ClickBank are good examples of popular affiliate networks. There are many.
At this point however, do not bog yourself down with this particular aspect because it's just the technical side of things and it really doesn't matter at this point. The most important thing to understand is your role of helping people searching for somehting. What exact products you promote and what company you partner with is not what you need to be concerned about right now.
How The Process Works
There are different ways you can do affiliate marketing but the way I'm showing you is by far the best and least expensive way to get started.
Other methods of doing affiliate marketing include email marketing, video marketing, social media marketing and paid traffic. Essentially they all follow the same core principal (promoting other people's stuff) but drive traffic to their affiliate links in different ways.
The method I am teaching you allows you to build a part-time or full-time income with very little outlay and allows you to drive TONS of targeted free traffic. Without traffic, you'll never make money online. Plain and simple. I'm going to show you how to attract an endless supply of people searching for things through Google, Yahoo and Bing. It's free, highly targeted and can be very lucrative.
All of these steps are going to be covered in the training so don't worry about knowing everything now. All will be revealed. This is just to give you an overview so you understand the overall concept.
Real World Example
- Sam is searching on Google for information on the best tent to buy for his next camping trip
- Your niche website shows up in Google search results for 'tent reviews' so he clicks on the Google link which takes him to your tent review website
- Sam reads a few reviews on your site and finds the one he is looking for
- He then clicks on one of your 'affiliate links' within your review which takes him to the Amazon store
- He buys the tent from Amazon who takes care of the entire ordering, payment and delivery process
- Amazon pays you a commission for sending them a new customer
What The Heck Is An Affiliate Link?
It is just a text link like one of the many you see in red on my website, you click on links all the time. The only difference is these are special links coded to you and when people buy stuff from a particular vendor after clicking on one of them, you get paid a commission.
Each vendor has different terms. Some pay high commissions, some not so high. You could promote $2 widgets or $10,000 home entertainment systems. It's totally up to you.
Is There Too Much Competition?
When I first came into this business I thought there was just too much competition and I'd need to find some secret untapped niche that no ones thought of to make money. LOL!
As I have come to learn, this was nothing more than a misconception based on my own fears.
The reality is completely the opposite. There are millions of great niche ideas and each one has the potential to create a part-time or even full-time income! That said, the best way to succeed with this is to focus on ONE at a time though, especially when you are new to this.
The point is there are literally millions of low competition and completely untapped niche ideas for you to dominate and I'm going to show you exactly how to find them in lesson #3.
Even if you choose to go with something that does have a lot of competition you can absolutely succeed with that too! Competition just means there's money to be made and there's no reason to assume other people are any smarter or more equipped to succeed than you. No way!
You've learned the core concept of affiliate marketing and seen an overview of the process involved. You now understand that providing people with value is absolutely paramount and that money can be made in any niche at all.
There are many things yet to be covered so don't stress if you still don't quite understand all of this. That is perfectly normal, you are learning. This is only lesson #1 and everything I've touched on here I'm going to explain in full detail in the coming lessons. You can do this!
