The Company: Pet Protector/ GoldStar
Current CEO: Teresa Lopez
Startup Cost: $0 - $3,999
Pet Protector is owned by a company named GoldStar i.s.l.p. which was founded in 2011 by Steven Williams JR. The company began distributing their anti-parasite discs through the multi level marketing business model shortly after in 2012. When I started digging into this company there were some red flags popping up that couldn’t be ignored, the further I investigated the worse things appeared.
The first thing I noticed was that I could not find any information whatsoever outside of their website about GoldStar… anywhere. They are not BBB registered and there is nothing online about this company. Given how the Pet Protector website is set to ‘private’ it’s pretty difficult to determine the real owners behind it.
Having a private domain registration is not bad in itself, but there seems to be a fair amount of secrecy overall. I may have found why this is the case and I’ll share this in a moment. The other thing I found rather strange was that their website only gives people a very brief description of their CEO, Teresa Lopez. There is no picture of her and she is nowhere to be seen online, this is the CEO we are talking about here. Anyway, let’s look futher.
The company attempts to fill a legitimate need for an alternative to using harsh chemicals on our pets to prevent fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. If it worked, it would be great! Certainly sounds like a great concept that’s for sure. They claim the technology is made of steel alloys and is based on Scalar Wave technology which apparently creates an invisible shield around your pet to stop the nasties attacking them.
Do They Work?
Maybe, some say they do and some say they don’t. I haven’t purchased the product myself so I cannot say for sure I will say that there’s no credible third party research to back up the companies claims.
They do provide some ‘official research results’ but these cannot be verified or proven. These studies were conducted by company representatives, meaning it was somewhat biased at best. They did mention the use of university undergraduates taking part in the research but there’s no way to know what part they played.
While it seems many people swear by these discs, there are an equal amount of folks who swear they don’t. It might be worth checking out the reviews online from verified purchasers on Amazon. I guess which reviews are worth listening to is something you would have to determine for yourself.
What About Price?
The company actively sells this product on Amazon for $79 US delivered:
Distributors sell it through their replicated websites for $73.40 US delivered:
This means there is only a $5.60 incentive to purchase through a distributor, not very cool for reps. It’s pricing like this that point to the whole thing being about recruiting, since the company itself is competing with reps for retail sales. At such a small price difference a lot of people would rather shop through Amazon since they naturally know and trust this marketplace already. You might be surprised just how many.
The other thing I want to mention is the companies use of imagery that suggests more credibility than they really have such as “as seen on TV” and “Veterinary Approved”.
This is mostly just marketing hype and is pretty baseless. I cannot see anywhere they have been featured on Television other than advertising, they have not been tested and proven by third party science and they have not been ‘veterinarian approved’ I guess it’s possible they were featured on the news at some point but I couldn’t find any evidence of this, the news video they featured on their site had nothing to with the company itself.
This Might Help Explain Things
After looking into GoldStar I came across a very similar company known as CatanDog who also specialise in the same anti-parasite discs for pets using Scalar Waves. This is the exact same patented product that GoldStar owns the exclusive rights to. On their website (www.catandogs.net) there is NO information anywhere about who owns it, who developed the products or where they are manufactured. Nothing.
That is very strange to say the least and it stands to reason that GoldStar owns both Pet Protector AND CatanDog. I found a comment on a blog post from a distributor who states that this is the case:
Fair enough, but why does this matter. I think I might have found why they are trying to keep the 2 companies separate from one another. Turns out there is ONE third party scientific study that investigated CatanDog’s pet discs and they found them to be ineffective. We are talking about the only credible, reliable and completely unbiased scientific research done into these products and the results showed that they do not work.
They even state this on their own website:
Again, I’m not saying the discs don’t work myself since I haven’t personally used them on my dog. I am simply showing you what I found during my research and I think you have the right to know the facts before joining. So what do you do and how do you know? If you want to know, the best thing to do is try them out for yourself and see what you think. If you like them and they work great, then the business could be very worthwhile getting into and you’ve solved your pet’s flea and tick issues!
The Pet Protector Compensation Plan Explained
The compensation plan works on a ‘binary’ system which means you only ever have 2 people on your first level, and everyone else you recruit only has 2 people all the way down the line. This means you only ever have 2 ‘downline legs’ or branches as some call them, this is important to remember as I go through this.
There are 4 enrolment options for people getting into this and each come with differing terms:
Free- Earnings capped at $1000 per month
Senior Representative $179.70- Earnings capped at $2000 per month
Manager $999- Earnings capped at $5000 per month
Senior Manager $3999- Unlimited earnings potential
These prices are somewhat cheaper if you start at those levels at the very beginning. For example Senior manager is half the price if you buy in at that level straight up.
In order to make any money with this company you need to ‘remain active’ each month. This can be done by either purchasing 1 or more pet discs each month, buying a leads pack for $48 for 16 clicks or by subscribing to the monthly back office tools for $19.95 per month.
If you are inactive for one month, you lose your commissions:
Inactivity for 2 months means your entire account is terminated without the possibility for re-activation in the future.
Ways You Can Earn
You can earn a retail commission of between 20-40% depending on what starter pack you buy in at.
If you sell one of the 3 paid start up packages within your first 10 days you’ll get a $5o bonus.
Commissions on Start up Packages
Earn either a $15, $20 or $100 commission for selling one of the 3 paid start up packages.
This is the bread and butter of the comp plan and you need to directly sponsor 2 people who remain active in order for this to be unlocked. This has to do with the binary structure I mentioned above. This is a commission based on your weaker legs sales volume which includes products and starter pack purchases. Your commission rate varies according to what pack you have purchased yourself as shown below.
It wasn’t made clear whether any unpaid volume in your stronger leg transfers over into the next month as some companies do. This is probably worth checking out with whoever you decide to sign up under if you are going to join.
Career Building Bonuses
These bonuses are actually pretty lame until you hit the Mercedes CLS bonus. This is held for the absolute top performers (normally less than 1% at best) and normally comes with some elaborate strings attached. Reps must maintain 20k worth of volume in their weaker leg ever single month to keep this car.
Since these bonus cars are often on some kind of lease agreement, failure to meet the 20k each month most often means the company will cease paying your monthly fees.
Giving You Leads… Really?
The company gives its reps the ability to purchase leads in the form of clicks to their distributor websites.
This costs $48 for every 16 clicks they give you, or $3 per click. While I do like to see a company taking some initiative this way and not just telling people to use the warm market approach, this is insanely expensive for 1 click on your replicated website. Unless this is for people who have registered their email details to learn more, then this would be worthwhile.
I personally get 1000’s of targeted website visitors to my websites each month for a grand total of zero dollars. Even if I was paying for targeted traffic it would have to be freaking awesome to be paying $3 per click I can assure you. There are much better and more cost effective ways to drive targeted leads to your offers than this but again, it is nice to have as an option I suppose.
What I Liked
- Potentially great product if it actually worked
- You can start for free and upgrade your membership as you start brining in more referrals
What I Didn’t Like
- Studies have proven the ineffectiveness of an identical product owned by GoldStar
- The company sells the products for almost the same price on Amazon as on their main website
- The cost of the clicks they are selling are totally unsustainable as a means to build your business
When I first looked at this company it seemed to have some great things going for it, but the deeper I went into things the more questions started arising. Who knows, maybe the product really does work. It would be very cool if it did. I think it’s best if you try them yourself and see what you think, you will see a lot more success in the business side of things if you are passionate about what you are promoting so it’s worthwhile.
I also think you could make a good amount of money building your organisation and it’s nice they give you an option to buy leads. I do think there are better and more cost effective options for getting leads though but at least they give you an option outside of chasing family and friends right? Whatever you decide, at least now you can make a more informed decision moving forward!
