Creating Useful Content + Finding Awesome Keywords= Winning!
Understanding keywords and how to create useful content for your target audience is a BIG part of creating a successful online business. In fact, these 2 elements alone are arguably the most important ingredients to your entire website.
If you know how to target keywords, you can get rankings in Google. If you can get rankings you can get traffic and ultimately, make sales.
What Are Keywords?
A keyword is a search term a person types into a search engine like Google or Bing to find something online. For example: “how to lose weight before summer” or “best bluetooth headphones” are both keywords. People simply type these keywords into the Google search bar to find the answer to their questions.
In the example below, the keyword is at the top, and the content that is being ranked for that keyword appears in the search results for the user to click on:
There are endless amounts keywords people use online to find answers to endless amounts of questions. This is one of the key reasons why there is such a massive potential within the online space. People are always searching for things online so the opportunity is limitless.
Why They Are SO Important To Your Business
The reason keywords matter within the scope of your online business is because your primary objective is to get your content in front of people who are performing searches within Google. The only way to get ranked is to let Google know what your content is about.
You show Google what your content is about with the keyword you target.
Each article you publish should be targeting ONE main keyword and the content should be crafted according to that keyword. The end result is a relevant and useful piece of content that Google WANTS to show people.
You see, Google only cares about giving it's users the most relevant and useful content it possibly can. Your success and website may be the most important thing to you, but Google only cares about the usefulness and relevancy of the content you can offer their users. This is business, and to be successful you need to know how things really work.
Yep, I highlighted the same thing twice. It's that important 😉 Read it again, and again.
Focus on making your content great and relevant (yep, there it is again) and you will see a lot of success online. I am telling you it really is this simple. If you learn nothing else from me, learn this concept above all. The one I've highlighted 3 times.
y targeting a low-competition keyword and creating useful and relevant content, you WILL get ranked in Google and you WILL make money as a result by promoting affiliate products.
This is how I have built my sites to pull in 10,000's of high quality, laser targeted visitors each and every month for free and how I am able to work exclusively from home.
The Concept of Low-Competition Keywords
I always recommend targeting low-competition keywords, especially as you are just starting out. It takes time for your site to grow in authority and become trusted by search engines so the absolute BEST and QUICKEST way to get into the profit is by going after the keywords that are easy to rank for.
It is WAY better to get a small number of visitors from a LOT of keyword targeted articles than none from several articles targeting high competition keywords.
How do you find these low-comp keywords? The first thing you need to do is come up with broad ideas, then drill down from there.
For example, if your niche is "mountain hiking" you might start with the following 'types' of content and go from there. Types of content could include:
- How to guides
- Product reviews
- Tips on hiking safely
- Product comparisons
- Survival guides for hiking
- Best travel packages for hiking
The list goes on and on, but you get my point. Start with something broad and drill down.
If you wanted to do a product review for example, you could drill down by listing the various mountain hiking product brands, then look at the individual products. Note some of these down and start doing your research to come up with low-competition keyword ideas.
You know your niche better than anyone, so you probably already know the main brands out there. To give you an example, I did some digging using Jaaxy and (without knowing the first thing about this niche) and came up with 3 highly targeted SUPER low-competition keywords in less than 1 minute:
Each of these are awesome keywords and would be easy to rank for. The only metrics that matter are the ones I've put an orange box around. The first number is how many people are searching for the keyword each month and the second is the "QSR" which is a reliable gauge on competition. The ideal QSR is lower than 100, but lower than 300 is good.
I've shown you the example using Jaaxy but the free WA keyword tool is awesome and will give you the same results, just not as quickly and not with as many features.
I personally think Jaaxy is WELL worth it but you don't 'need' it if you are on a tight budget.
How To USE Keywords Within Your Content
Once you have come up with a good keyword, the next step is figuring out how to properly place them within your content. This is very important to ensuring Google knows exactly what your content is about and doesn't see you as a spammer for stuffing keywords in over and over again. It's all about being natural and writing for humans.
Personally, I place my keyword naturally in the following places:
- Page title
- First couple of sentences (should see it without scrolling down after landing on the page)
- Name a relevant image with the keyword where possible (image title and alt text)
- Include it once in a H1 or H2 heading within the content where possible
- The page URL has the keyword included (AKA the 'permalink')
That's pretty much it! Never force the keyword where it doesn't look natural and you don't always have to do every one of those on every post. I don't. I won't say this is the 'perfect' formula (I don't think there is one) but this is what I do and it works well.
The video below walks you through some of the elements I've discussed and it will help you get a visual on things. It's worth watching:
Ninja Ranking Strategy (Advanced)
This is quite an advanced strategy and I almost didn't include it, but I thought you guys might like it! I highly recommend getting yourself familiar with the basics first and getting some rankings and traffic before attempting this, but it's up to you.
The training isn't going anywhere so you can always bookmark it and come back to it later!
Ready? Ok, here it is...
One of the quickest and most effective ways to get tons of high quality traffic quickly is to get yourself ahead of the curve within your chosen niche. Think about events, products, news or anything else that might be coming up. Topics people are going to be searching for in the near future. Maybe topics people are going to be searching MORE of in the future.
If you get in early, the competition won't just be low, it will be almost non-existent!
For example: Until recently, almost no one was searching for the keyword "virtual reality headset" because the technology simply wasn't there. But as of writing this, over 1,000's of people are searching Google using this ONE keyword every single month.
If you had published an article targeting this keyword before the more established websites, you'd be ranking for this AND the related keywords. The end result is 10,000's of visitors coming to your site for ONE article and a lot of money being made promoting VR headsets.
This is very powerful stuff, how far you take it is up to you. The concept of timing is important when it comes to rankings whether you do this strategy or not, so it's good to know either way. Don't worry too much about timing outside of this strategy, but just know that it can play a big part.
I personally do product reviews on my website, so I keep an eye out on upcoming products and sometimes get reviews out on launch day or shortly thereafter. So I use this myself according to my niche which is what you can do.
Since the topic is so new, the keyword tool won't always show competition so it's a matter of checking the search results yourself and seeing who is trying to rank already. Again, this is an advanced strategy but it can be very powerful when done correctly.
Hopefully this training and some of the resources I've linked to have provided you with some insight into keywords and content creation to help you get a solid start on your business.
Don't worry if some of this is confusing, this is normal. You are just starting out and this is all new to you! Rest assured, you can do this. Give yourself the time needed to succeed.
The best way to learn is really just to DO it yourself in my opinion. That's all I did. Just follow the training, soak up some of the info I have given you and get to work on your site. If you make mistakes, that's fine! In fact. you'd be doing something wrong if you didn't make any mistakes! It's all part of the process.
